Re: Overwintering Cannas and Hedychium

Title: Re: Overwintering Cannas and Hedychium
I've seen several messages about over-wintering cannas. I have a plant in my lawn and I asked my wife if it was a canna and she said, "Yes."
And so I went out and photo'd it which I attach.
As you can see from the picture, my main interest is in bromeliads with occasional others as you can see. My wife stuck the canna into the ground several years ago and it has hung on quite well in spite of our almost perfect inattention.
Recently I installed an automatic watering spray which it gets, three times a week in summer and twice in winter for about ten minutes. It doesn't seem to have either hurt or helped it! It blithely ignores its surroundings and does its thing. Others will have to comment about its shortcomings or perfection.

Our climate is mild. We are about ten miles from the Pacific Ocean, 200 miles N of LA and south of SF. We only get rain (~20"/yr) between about November and March. It rarely gets down to 30F and then usually only for a few hours early in the morning somewhere in the last two weeks of December.
If you are as lucky as we are in climate, just stick them in the ground and forget them. If you have another climate, try to mimic our conditions.
I suspect light water and good drainage are good factors.
