As it happens bergenias are one of my favourites as they are so valiant; will grow almost anywhere with no fuss or bother, have an attractive flower, red leaved in the winter, look wonderful as the light reflects off the leaves on a windy day or after rain, and are very easy to propagate. Just like obliging and unfussy people they are easily overlooked :)
Oh, and to answer your question ( although the garden was in France not Cal) I did grow several varieties and they all seemed to do well although the common crassifolia (?) thrived best.
