Echium pininana is classified as a biennial or short-lived perennial. A biennial blooms the second year, then dies. Thus, whatever the soil, a two year life-span would be common. To have it in flower every year, you'd need to plant it 2 years in a row, then save seedlings to replant each year. E. candicans is perennial. I don't know about halopensis. Pam Peirce
