I had assumed that since they also seem to thrive with no summer water that there might be a problem. Thank you very much for the info, and for identifying the beast for me.

Carol,

You don't say where you live.  It would be help to make a relevant reply if
you would set up a signature with your city, and USDA and Sunset zones.

southern California.  That's a fairly standard combination for this area.

Your yucca sounds like Yucca elephantipes --most often misidentified as Y.
gloriosa (the true Y. gloriosa has softer foliage of a good blue color).  Y
elephantipes (elephant's foot) comes from areas with summer rainfall
(Central and South America)--often lots of rain.  There will be no problem
giving it extra water.
