On another note, I wonder if any California members
are growing the summer deicduous E. dendroides? I am
reminded of how beautiful this plant looked covering
whole hillsides in bright red fall colors as it was
going dormant in Crete in May, and as featured on the
cover of Heidi Gildemeister's new book, Gardening the
Mediterranean Way. She lists it as being potentially
invasive here in California, but I have never seen it
offered by any growers/nurseries. Anyone have
experience with it? If it isn't invasive, it sure
would make a spectacularly colorful, drought hardy
small shrub for unwatered and hot sunny slopes!

I planted one about 5 years ago (got it from the Dry Garden in Berkeley), and never watered after first year or two. Here are some photos from 2002 on.

It looks a bit ratty when dormant, but great in bloom, and it blooms for 3 months. It does self-sow quite a bit; while I did not notice anything for the first 2 years or so, I have plenty of volunteers now. Not as invasive or prolific as E.characias, rigida, or myrsinites, but definitely has some invasive potential.
