Ex Lawn

When I finally got the nerve to dig up my grass, I felt a great relief to say nothing of all the extra time I had in the garden. I simply covered wide areas with newspaper, then covered those areas with rotted horse manure - over and over and over. Then I planted Australian natives, especially grevilleas. It took a few years for them to grow, but now I have a low maintenance, colorful (especially in our autumn and winter) areas and NO WEEDS. The gophers do not like grevilleas, the deer won't eat them, and if you water them in the summer, they will die. What more could you want? Bill Grant, central coast California.
