Gill,
Regarding groundcover under roses, Scaevola 'Mauve

Cheiranthus species ought to work well, or possibly dwarfer growing Dianthus varieties.
I couldn't start to compete with David's extraordinarily comprehensive list of annuals for shade, but regarding groundcover for roses in NZ the Sweet Alyssum (or Sweet Alice) lobularia maritima is sometimes used. This is best treated as an annual but once established seeds so freely it rarely needs replanting. The white is still the most vigorous I think, but can be enlivened by a few of the pinks and mauves.
