Re: tracking the garden

Hi Nan,

Excel files, garden diary, index cards all required too much bookkeeping effort and took time away from gardening and other fun stuff. Then I tried putting metal labels next to each new plant with name and planting date but either the labels got wacked by the gardening crew or got buried by growing plants. My efforts at record keeping is more a history of what didn't work.

I think I've finally pared down my garden record keeping to a sustainable level. I log in new plant purchases in an Excel file and file the receipts in a folder. Whenever I get the plants into the ground or a plant is looking particularly lovely, I take a photo on my digital camera and store the photos on my computer. This way, at least I know what the plant looks like at various times of the year and have a rough idea how long it took to get to its current size. Also I have a record of what plants I've already purchased but are no longer around. There is a lot of information lacking with this method (growing notes, rainfall/temps) but it's better than nothing. and I love photography so I don't mind spending time in the garden with a camera.

I'm working on a piece about ways to track of what happens in the garden.  Anyone care to share their favorite method?  Probably best to reply off-list since this is not terribly on-topic.

Thanks
