Having operated a tropical hibiscus mail list for 9 years, how to show
pictures has been discussed many times.

Here are a few suggestions:

1. Pictures taken with a plain background have smaller file sizes than
those with busy (high detail) backgrounds like grass.
2. Pictures needn't fill the monitor: 3-400 pixels wide is enough.
3. Cropping pictures to get rid of the non-essential helps reduce
picture size and file size.
4. Only 72x72 ppi and close to a 50% "quality" if you have software for
photo editing.
4. Better to put on the web and there are websites that make things
really easy for novices -- like <http://www.phanfare.com/> and <http://
www.photosite.com/>
