There is avery good program available for free on the net from www.irfanview.com
called, naturally, IrfanView, that allows one to (among other things) crop and resize photos.
It can save them in various formats. I think it requires Windows 2000 or later. It has a lot
of advanced features, for which I believe you may have to pay to get the instructions for.
But for functions such as cropping and resizing, the instructions are there in the downloaded program.
One can take the digital image, convert it to a TIF format to preserve all of the picture quality,
and work with it in TIF format until saving a downsized copy in JPEG format.
(You lose some picture quality every time you save a JPEG file.)
If you have space on your hard drive, you can keep the TIF files for future use.
A reduced JPEG image typically runs from 80 to 150 Kb in 5 x 7 size.
