Of course we CAN grow dahlias! I DID grow dahlias, and taught lessons on dahlia culture back in the 70s and 80s at South Coast Botanic Garden. In fact they had a nice collection of tree dahlias the last time I was there. But good results with dahlias require lots of supplemental water during the summer as well as a deep well enriched soil.
I since have given up these two garden requirements (except for edible crops) in the interest of sustainability. Since, I've found new plants which bring interest and beauty to the garden as well as adaptability to our soils and dry summer conditions. :-)
