Hi,
I have a magnolia from S. Carolina planted in the sun which gets large white flowers and I have had it for over 20 years. It even survived a servere attack by my husband when his weed eater pealed the outer bark when it was young. The only problems I have is that it needs iron. Our temperatures in Greece were over 106 in the shade with humidity of 45 to 50% this summer and it is doing fine. My soil ph is close to neutral. Another magnolia tree purchased locally and the same age is in a lot of shade and is surviving but hardly producing flowers. It does not get much water so that may also influence it not doing well.
