tulips

Hi,

Could someone tell me how deep to plant tulips? I live above Athens, Greece and some years we get 2 to 3 feet of snow for a few days only and sometimes puddles freeze for half a day and other years the temperatures barely go below freezing and only for a few days a winter.  Daffodils and freesias usually do well, but tulips that I planted in the past did not last long.  I read somewhere that they should be planted very deep.  I saw local people plant tulips on short raised beds with trenches along each side, but the tulips when flowering did not look particularly good.
