Special talk about roses and Australia

There is going to be a special talk about lost roses, rose breeders, Australian history and a beautiful new book titled: The Women behind the Roses. If you are interested in how Roses get their names, how to create beautiful new roses and a special time in rose history - you will not want to miss this talk!  The Authors took 20 years to write this book, and their only US stops were New York, Portland and now San Jose. They are already here, visiting our city and took time out of their schedule to check out our Pumpkins in the Park event and introduced themselves.   I was already hooked when they started talking about the blue whales they can see from their home in the deep natural harbor in the southern part of Australia they call home.
Please come listen to this talk and help me welcome these Aussies to San Jose - this will probably be the last time they visit San Jose.

The Women behind the Roses
Tuesday, October 12
7:00 to 8:00 pm
$10/members, $15/non-members
Ever wonder just how to get a rose named after someone or the stories behind successful rose breeders? Come join the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy and enjoy authors Tilly & Andrew Govanstone with their new book: The Women behind the Roses: An Introduction to Alister Clarkâs Women Rose-namesakes 1915-1952.  Alister Clark, Australiaâs most prodigious rosarian, bred roses for 40 years trying to establish new, improved varieties, that would extend their flowering beyond a season: ideally to bear blossoms all year round. The authors are noted for their detective work finding âlostâ Alister Clark roses and researching the namesakes while traveling throughout Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. This beautiful book is a celebration of these 65 women who served and shaped their countries to which the late Alister Clark chose to dedicate his âGlenara Seedlingâ roses. Filled with biographical sketches, the book also provides contemporary horticultural notes on their roses.
