I have always been aware that here in Kaitoke is not a Mediterranean climate, as we get too much rain. However, we do not get too heavy frosts, so can grow many Mediterranean plants with greater or lesser degrees of success. However, the last 36 hours has reinforced why we called our garden 'Raindrops'. I have recorded 242 mm of rain in that time, and 220 mm of that fell yesterday! Not surprisingly both our streams were about a metre above their normal level and we had some low lying areas of the garden flooded for a few hours.
Anything over 200 mm in a month is very wet for us and I recorded 2286 mm for the twelve months ended 30 September 1997. I have only had the rain gauge for a year, and I would think that was a fairly wet year from memory. The longest spell without rain in all the last year was 15 days at the end of April and beginning of May. So, we obviously have no problems with watering at the moment!
I know there was a lot of flooding in the Wellington region yesterday and many slips on the hillsides. I think we got off quite lightly, and apart from a couple of areas covered with silt, where the streams flowed through, the garden is really none the worse for wear.
