Non-medit Spring in Tasmania

Spring was very exciting this year in Tasmania The Magnolias, Camellias
and daffodils really blooming magnificently. the Acer japonicas are
beautiful with their tender, new leaves. The birds are pairing up and
collecting their building requirements so we are all really enjoying Spring,
all except the weather which has turned very nasty. From day time temps.
of 18C - 24 for several weeks, today it is 12C and wind and rain makes
gardening a "must do" situation rather than a joy. As we have two large
gardens, we have to be as busy as the birds at this time of year.
I feel we may have a hot summer.
At our country property, our bush was full of Acacia and the
blossoming had been early and most striking, blossoms very
full. It is a country saying here that when the wattle is
early and full, the fruit trees will be laden and the sun will
be hot. Our cherry trees were certainly laden with blossom.

The daffodils have increased and made a wonderful gleam in the grass, the
hamamelis shone with their yellow and brown-orange stars and managed to
perfume both house and garden. The Viburnums tried to out-do them and the
Camellias are still blooming and so add dashes of crimson, white and pink
in the camellia circle. Snow flakes and snow drops popped up everywhere, I
swear they are able to travel large distances underground, go "walk-about"
in other words
This winter has been very moderate, not the winter
of my childhood memories. We are lulled into
thinking that our climate is truely becoming so very
mild. Still, on the flip side, in our hearts we are
frightened the lovely winters are caused by the green
house effect.
The many Rhododendrons are splendid both in their blooming and the perfume
they send to all corners of the garden. If you, though being
medit-planters would like to see the photos of the Rhododendrons, flowering
now at "Kibbenjelok", I have placed a whole page of photos taken with a
digital camera, at Suite101 [on signature, I hope] at which I have become an
editor and write a monthly Tasmanian Journal. This is part reason why you
have not been harassed with my lengthy letters lately! That, and the birth
of two grandchildren and another coming for the best of Christmas presents.
Time races by, so much happening in the garden and private life. Usually,
I have to pull myself up and speak severely to myself to get priorities
right. "The gardens are not to always to take first place, this year I
didn't have to remind myself!!
Now the garden will give me the delight of the Roses and Iris.
>From the showy "stockbroker's" garden the mood will change to the
"romantic". Gardening is so exciting, isn't it?
Regards to all my medit-garden friends,
Gay
