Just a note to say that all those who suggested that the "Texas beetle" was
beastly old Otiorhyncus the vine weevil (aka Taxus beetle) were absolutely
right. We've got a good idea of how to deal with this nasty pest - though
neither bio control (because of the minimum temp required) nor the
organophosphorous compounds (because the granules stay put in their
original positions in soil and the larvae have to come into direct contact
with them - and they're quite phytotoxic in some genera) work as well as
aldrin used to, when it was still permitted.
