Garden conference in Perth

"WA HOSTS HISTORY CONFERENCE

The WA branch of the Australian Garden History Society will be a
first-time host when the Society holds its annual cnference in Fremantle
next weekend.

This year's conference theme is Gardening in a Mediterranean Climate and
will focus on the problems associated with WA's poor soils, water
shortages and high summer temperatures.

Speakers are Professor George Seddon (a foundation member of the
Society), Associate Professor Stan Kailis, Dr. Doroth Erickson, Stephen
Forbes, Alex George, Greg Keighery, Noel Nannup and South African
horticulturalist Geoff Nichols, a specialist in that country's use of
its flora for medicinal purposes.

On the Friday, a welcoming cocktail party will be held at Lenaville,
Professor Seddon's historic home at Fremantle. The program also will
include visits to New Norcia, Kings Park and the gardens at Government
House and the University of WA.

Botanist and garden designer Marion Blackwell will lead a three-day
wildflower tour before the conference. Highlights of a post-conference
tour will be visits to vineyards and private gardens in the South-West;
this will be guided by John Viska, chairman of the society's WA branch,
which celebrates its 10th anniversary in November.

The Australian Garden History Society was formed with more than 2000
members during the first garden history conference in Melbourne in 1980.
The society's aim is to promote interest in, and research of historic
gardens as a major component of the National Estate.

Sounds great, these speakers are all experts. Wish I could attend.
Perhaps some interesting things will come out of it.
