We get great autumn colour from Ginkgo - yellow, tupelo (Nyssa
sylvatica) - great reds and oranges; Washington Thorn - Crataegus
phaenopyrum, reds; Betchel Crab - Malus ioensis, reds;
Hydrangea quercifolia - in a shaded spot, deep reds; Berberis - all
the red leaved forms, oranges and reds; Viburnum opulus - reds,
Dawn Redwood - Metasequoia glyptostroboides, russet browns,
and the various forms of Japanese Full Moon Maple - Acer
japonicum 'Aconitifolium' and 'Vitifolium', reds and oranges (these
are much tougher in the leaf substance than the many lovely and
colourful forms of Acer palmatum). We are also able to grow
Japanese Flowering Cherries and these have some forms with good
autumn colour - Shirotae (Mt Fuji a big white flower), Ukon (the
greenish flowered one), Shimidzu Zakura (pale pink to white), Tai
Haku (Great White cherry). I would try Mikuruma-gaeshi if I had
room. I just like the name - 'The Emeror's Carriage Returns'.
