A few weeks ago, I sent out a message asking what people plant for fall
color (I had flowers in mind when I asked this question, though I got some
great suggestions for colorful fall foliage), and though I was bemoaning
the condition of the garden at the time, my kids have proven to me that it
was just unnecessary bellyaching. They went out to cut a boquet the other
night and came back with a spectacular assortment in the hottest of colors.
I was so impressed -- the boquet included:
Salvia indigo spires (blue)
Alstromeria (crimson flower with gold throat)
verbena bonariensis (lavendar)
Leonotis leonuris (orange flower clusters)
Mexican sage (purple "on the red side")
Some rosemary sprigs
Salvia vanhoutii (burgundy flower)
Penstemon (one with a red flower)
Tithonia ("Mexican sunflower" with a hot orange flower about 4" across)
I gotta say it was a spectacular combination -- especially considering the
kids are 6 1/2 and 8! Great color sense if I may say so myself... Amazing
what kids will teach you!
What I learned is that I need to put more of those same plants throughout
the garden so that the color is more evident this time of year.
