Clematis

Could someone give me suggestions as to what to do about all my Clematis plants are that are turning black.  I think mites are sucking the leaves, but when I sprayed one plant it died within a few days so I am afraid to spray again. I'd like to know how to get rid of the mites and save the Clematis. It seems like this is a problem I have every summer, but this year it is so bad I am afraid the plants will not revive.  Thanks for your help.
