I've searched lots of photos and Brachychiton acerifolius seems to be the closest. There is a picture at http://www.cuyamaca.net/OH170/Plant_TNails/Brachychiton_acerifolius__B ark_9-13-99_6.jpg that shows the mature bark, like mine at the base of the tree, and leaves, plus the long arching pedicels. So thank you all. Now I just need to know how many more years it will be before it flowers. It's about 30 now. Diane Whitehead
