Regarding goats, my experience with the annual 4 or 5 month attack by ibex (cabra iberica or pyreneaca, so I'm told) from the bordering park, now in full swing, is that they won't eat brambles - for whatever that's worth - and seem to have no desire for stuff with yellow-green variegated leaves like periwinkle, hebe, eounymous(?). On the other hand, they're favourite is the rose leaf. A suitable fence, given time, can be made with yucas, prickly pear cactus and, I'm guessing, berberis.
