Re: rose question

Dear Janet,

Just so you know, Sally Holmes isn't a hybrid musk, but in a class called
Shrub Roses. In southern California, Sally gets very tall and is almost
always used as a climber. It doesn't have the hybrid musk signature
fragrance.

You are right about the hybrid musks liking a little shade, especially in
our hot climate. I have Cornelia, Buff Beauty, Nastarana (some class this a
musk and some don't) and Lavender Lassie (which makes a big climber). They
all have that wonderful musk rose fragrance, in Nastarana it's especially
clove like. They bloom heavy in spring and fall, sometimes taking the hot
summer off, unless they can get a little shade then.

Happy rose growing,

Robin Corwin
I garden in Studio City, Ca (LA area) in the hills.
Zone 9/10, Sunset Zone 21

P. S. Descanso Gardens in the Los Angeles area has a large collection of
hybrid musks including all of the above and Felicia, Danae, Penelope,
Francesca, Thisbe, Moonlight, Gravin Michel D'Ursel, Mozart, Kathleen,
Bishop Darlington, Nur Mahal, Daybreak, Ballerina, Eva, Queen of the Musks,
Bloomfield Dainty, Grandma's Lace, Clytemnestra, Pax, Vanity, Erfurt, Pink
Prosperity, Will Scarlet and Andenken an Alma de L'aigle. They are found in
the area surrounding the Mission Garden section of the Rosarium, many under
shady oaks part of the time.

At the Descanso Plant Prooagation Sale held on October 5th and 6th from 9-4,
we will have a few hybrid musks for sale, all own root cuttings from the
Descanso Collection. Numbers limited, but we will have Vanity, Will
Scarlet, Bishop Darlington and Francesca.
