Thanks for the ideas Nan, they just might work (the dog is short-sighted enough to give up if foiled for only a short period, perhaps like the elephant tied to a stake trick of circusmen of days gone by).

Hi Laura -- Try making your barrier stick up out of the ground a few inches. that seems to work
