A quick search of a few databases came up with Salvia major, as apparently
a valid name:
Labiatae Salvia major Garsault
Fig. Pl. Anim. Med. t. 510 a (1764); Descr. Pl. Anim. 305 (1767); Thell.
inBull. Herb. Boiss. Ser. II. viii. 905.
Salvia grandiflora has been published as a name by six authors, with only
the Seese & Moc. citations having dates listed (around 1890). It was listed
as another name under S. major, but not listed specifically as a synonym.
Without having the publications available I can't tell you how valid those
names are.

Apologies for sudden rush of queries. Sign of end of season?!
Can anyone (Nick? Richard?) tell me if S. major is a 'real' name? I have
the notion, probably mistaken, that it's a synonym for S. grandiflora - but
then S. grandiflora itself seems to be, um, doubtfully real? sometimes it's
referrred to this species, sometimes to that one...
In short: I'm confused. Again.
I've been given a plant by a friend who grew it from seed which arrived as
S. major. What I want to know is the simple stuff. Viz, What is it? Where's
it from? What's it need? What's it do? That's all! Nothing to it...
Anyone?
TIA,
Tim
