Richard - I agree your explanation is more than possible - but taking S.
major at face value it seems that it does/did at one time and at least in
one sense 'exist'. IPNI has the following entry:
Labiatae Salvia major Garsault
Fig. Pl. Anim. Med. t. 510 a (1764); Descr. Pl. Anim. 305 (1767); Thell.
inBull. Herb. Boiss. Ser. II. viii. 905.

Trouble is, as I think I said in first message, when you try to chase S.
grandiflora you get into an even bigger tangle, bouncing between alternative
names like some out of his head dodgem rider...
If nothing more definite transpires on the name front, I'll wait until the
brute flowers, which should help narrow down the options.
