Tim & Jon:

Here is what I came up with on Salvia grandiflora:

Salvia grandiflora definitions

grandiflora subsp. aegaea (Bornm.) Rech. fil.	tomentosa	Flora of Turkey, 7
grandiflora subsp. rotundifolia (Vis.) Rech. fil.	tomentosa	Flora of Turkey, 7
grandiflora var. cuneata Post	aramiensis	Flora of Turkey, 7
grandiflora var. cuneata Post	-------	Flora of Syria, Palestine, and Sinai
grandiflora var. rotundifolia (Vis.) Boiss.	-------	Flora of Syria,
Palestine, and Sinai
grandiflora var. vestita Bornm.	-------	Flora of Syria, Palestine, and Sinai
grandiflora Etlinger	-------	Flora Europea
grandiflora Etling.	tomentosa	Flora of Turkey, 7
grandiflora Etling.	-------	Flora of USSR
grandiflora Etling	-------	Flora of Syria, Palestine, and Sinai
grandifolia W. Smith	-------	Flora of China, 17
grandiflora Sessé & Moc.	fulgens, cardinalis, or gesneraeflora	A Revision of
Salvia, subgenus Calosphace (Carl Epling)
grandiflora Neé	patens	A Revision of Salvia, subgenus Calosphace (Carl Epling)
azurea var. grandiflora Benth.	azurea subsp. Pitcheri	A Revision of Salvia,
subgenus Calosphace (Carl Epling)

Salvia grandiflora Etlinger, defined in 1777, is now S. tomentosa. and S.
grandifolia W. Smith, defined in 1916, is the accurately defined usage.
Flora of Syria, Palestine, and Sinai by Post is an old reference.

I see no mention of Salvia major in any of the references. In the Catalogue
Synonymique des Salvia L. du Monde by Gabriel Alziar, he gives Salvia major
as varieties of mexicana and runcinata, an as a cultivar of coccinea. He
does not refer to Salvia major Garsault, Fig. Pl. Anim. Med. t. 510 a
(1764); Descr. Pl. Anim. 305 (1767); Thell., in Bull. Herb. Boiss. Ser. II.
viii. 905

Salvia grandiflora Etlinger: De Salvia 17 (1777)
Salvia grandifolia W. Smith: Notes Roy. Bot. Gard. Edinburgh 9: 123 (1916)

I have not been to the IPNI site yet.
