suggestions please

Could anyone from the list please recommend a planting for a trouble spot in
my garden. I'm in Davis, CA, Sunset zone 14. Hot, hot, hot in summer (we
had nineteen consecutive days above 100 this summer) and cold and wet in
winter. It can get as low as 18-20F in winter but usually it doesn't get
much below 30, sometimes for a few days though. Soil is clay.

I need something for an area under an ash tree (which belongs to the city).
The area's not right under the tree, but is shaded by it most of the day
until late afternoon. Then it gets about 45 minutes to an hour of the
strongest sun of the day, which really stresses the dry shade plants I have
there now (which are looking pretty crisp after a long hot Davis summer.)
The area is mounded with some boulders and is adjacent to the sidewalk(It's
the entryway to my front garden.) I've pondered long enough on my own and am
ready to seek the advice of the experts on this list. Thanks in advance for
any suggestions.
