Hi Barbara,
Two things about Japanese maples (Acer palmatum):
1) They are very susceptible to salt burn so I would
advise testing the gray water you are using before
continueing its use on the Maple. Salt burn symptoms
are brown, dried leaf margins and lack of vigor in
general.
2) They often show sun/wind burn in the first summer
after planting in my experience in the Bay Area.
Sometimes every summer for the first few years. You
might try an anti-transpirant (Cloud Cover is one
brand)applied next spring after the leaves have opened
but before warm weather. Ultimately they do fine
unless there is alot of wind and sun.
