Filoli, a public garden south of San Francisco (Calif.), used some
nemophilas in its bulb beds this past spring, in contrasting and
coordinating colors. Spectacular! I saw both California natives, baby
blue-eyes (N. menziesii), which is sky blue, and five-spot (N. maculata),
white with deep purple dots at the tip of each petal. Other bulb companions
were N. 'Pennie Black,' blackish purple with white edges; Viola x
wittrockiana cvs.; Viola cornuta cvs.; Ajuga reptans; Myosotis cvs.;
Aquilegia cvs. But since Filoli changes its beds completely a few times a
year, most of these were bulb companions more than bulb covers.
A couple specific combos were
-- N. menz. with Tulipa 'Dordogne'
-- N. mac. with Tulip mix: 'Hofstra University' 'Cum Laude' 'Maureen'
'Queen of the Night'
