Re: propagating ceanothus

Oops, I guess I was a little vague with the oasis.

These days, oasis is made for propagation in that each
cutting can be rooted in its own cube with a
"pre-drilled" hole already there for sticking the
cutting into. Sheets of cubes are pre-perforated (for
lack of a better term) so you can use as many cubes
that will fit the tray or flat you plan to use. You
can also find pyramid-shaped oasis, but you need
special trays to place these in. I don't have a
retail source since we order them by the case.

Here's my method:

1. Set the sheet of oasis, cut to size, in a flat.
2. Water it in with hot water, using a watering can.
Making sure the water has fully permeated the oasis
3. Cool oasis to room temperature before you stick the
cuttings.
4. Prep cuttings to your liking.
5. Stick cuttings, making sure you stick the cutting
deep enough that it's anchored in place, but not too
far down that it's sticking out the other side of the
flat.

Some people place domes over their cuttings to keep up
the humidity and temp in the flat.

If you have the American Hort Society's book Plant
Propagation, look up how they do fuchsia cuttings
using oasis. I would advise against the tray of water
underneath the flat for Ceanothus, although it does
work wonders for fuchsias.

I hope this makes sense! I may also have a slight
advantage since I have bottom heat and a mist bench
with a tent. I propagate plants for Seattle Parks. Let
me know if you have further questions.
