If your soil already has had mulch on it, it will be the most accepting of this new material, if the soil is currently bare, you might also mix in some dried leaves, lawn clippings, and other 'leafy' stuff. If other broadleaf material is mixed into these chippings, it may be fine: if 100% pine, adding 'complimentary' material might be considered to provide more diversity for the 'sheet composting' process. Fresh pine chips can also sometimes be very water repellant - if on a slope, consider this effect.
