I use my hands. I pull all of the dead leaves off from around the base and then run my fingers through the plant gently pulling dead leaves from between the healthy ones.
The more vigorous (fast growing) Carex can be scalped with good results. Setting them on fire might work as well.

I seem to be dealing with alot of barber shop plants these days....
Anyone comb their carex? I remember hearing somewhere that a great way to get rid of dead carex leaves is to go through the plant with a fine tooth comb. Does it work? Anything that works better? As I recall, carex don't regenerate nicely after a scalping.
