re:Shadyspot - Rhamnus alerternus

Hi Eric

If you're looking for a nursery in France growing garrigue natives such as
Rhamnus alaternus, well I'm there !

I just love Rhamnus, and of course Phillyrea (by the way, Phillyrea
angustifolia, Phillyrea latifolia, Phillyrea media and Phillyrea
rosmarinifolia all grow very well in lime), Bupleurum, but probably best of
all Pistacia lentiscus. We try encouraging the plantation of mixed hedges
of garrigue native shrubs.

Do you know of the quite rare and most interesting spontaneous hybrid
between Pistacia lentiscus and Pistacia terebinthus called Pistacia x
saportae ? I hope to succeed in propagating it some day : it is a small
tree like Pistacia terebinthus, but with the evergreen leaves of Pistacia
lentiscus ! Just great !

About garrigue natives, my best recent idea is to grow Brachypodium
ramosum, our local grass, for creating low maintenance lawns as with Zoysia
tenuifolia. It has to be mown from time to time, but it is incredibly
drought resistant, and stays green in winter.

<<My most successful choice to date for this type of problem is
Rhamnus alaternus,>>
That happens to be one of the more typical shrubs of the garrigue, here,
but I've never had the luck to get nurseries to stock it - it's regarded as
scrub! I'd reccommend it to anyone in a Med climate. Don't bother to
water; don't bother with much soil, it'll grow from a crack in the rock!
Another bush for hedges thet grows here is Phillyrea (latifolia for
lime, angustifolia for acid) has similar needs to Alaterne, but greyer
leaves. Gives a marbled effect when the two are mixed together in a
clipped hedge. Glad to hear, Sean, that Alaterne is appreciated somewhere
in the world,
 Eric----------
