Hi All
Wow does this bring up old memories. In the mid 60's I was a Horticulture
student at Cal Polytechnic Pomona, Calif. USA. The head of the department,
'Jolly' Batchellor was trying to propagate Eucalyptus ficifolia which is
used here in Calif. as a street tree. Some cultivars are exceptional with
good form, flowering and growth habits. Clonal varieties of these
cultivars would be valuable as seedlings are too variable.
Jolly presented his work to the International Plant Propagators Society so
if any of you have access to the proceedings of this group it might be
possible to report on it here.
The attempts at propagation of Euc's involved a wide range of rooting
hormones and rooting environment as is done in conventional propagation.
Nothing produced any results, and several ornamental species were used
with several cultivars and various types of growth-wood including juvnile
shoots from the Lignotuber? The discussion of success with rooting of
E.ficifolia was at a very low percentage less than 1% with extreme
etolation of the stock plant, a young 5gal. size plant of unknown habit
and characters. Now please I report this as "OVERHEARD" rather than as
observed facts. Other California growers have tried but no one that I have
heard of is selling quantities of clonal Euc's.
If anyone else has any other information on Euc's please let us know.
