Re: Dodonaea viscosa WAS: Re: RE: RE: Ailanthus altissima

wow, sounds wonderful. You would die around here with your oak pollen
allergies. Just about 1/4 of a mile from my house is very dense live
oak wood land (i think i may go collecting seeds from the Mimulus
plants that grow along side the road). I just read Sunsets description
of Lagunaria and it sounds like a pretty tree. Especially since it has
flowers! They say be careful about the pods with the irritating hairs
and all (Same thing with i think Fremontodendrons pods).
Monterey cypress could work but once it gets to a few decades old,
you have a flat topped crown of foliage about 40-50 feet up and no wind
blocking. Unless that is, you planted a lower shrub. I personally am a
bit bored with C. macrocarpa, its the commonest tree in my city (and
planted in odd situations, such as lining roads, where it lifts the
asphalt and cracks it)
I'm thinking of Dodonaea beacuase i also need a fairly quick wind
break because im getting tired of looking at the percolation lot behind
the house and at all the neighbors fences!. I did see a very
interesting use for corn plants this afternoon. I was in Salinas (Very
large Agricultural area), and i was passing by some fields of lettuce
and along the perimeter were corn plants. They were planted close
together. It looked quite beautiful really, and reminded me of some
clumping perennial grasses.
And as an aside, i am amazed at my neighbors sapling California Pepper
tree. The thing went from sparse gawky sapling to a lush 7 foot high
bush in about a year and a half. Ite very full and i think it will be
a pretty tree (one of the prettiest in the neighborhood) once it gets
about 10-15 feet high. These are another tree i have not so far seen
go feral and take over abandoned lots.
