Re: Diodonea viscosa
I believe the purpurea form is from New Zealand. I have grown it from
seed. Be sure the seed capsules are fully ripe - I got no germination from
one collection and good germination from a later collection of seeds. They
grow quite well and are not very paticular about water. They went through
last winter's rains no problem and my sporatic watering this summer, no
problem. Seedlings are subject to aphids which can distort the growth, and
the many grasshoppers this year had nibbled quite a bit, but otherwise no
problems. They are now about 3 feet tall. I thought the purple color came
from cold, or just older growth, as the growth this summer is more bronzy
green (they have been in the sun).
I see a lot of it around town, and my impression is that it is a good
landscape plant. I have seen several where three are planted together
which looks nice as unpruned that have a fairly narrow, pointed growth
habit.
