Hi folks
I have just got myself a copy of this book and am delighted with it. I
can see it being ap great source of both information and ideas.
However, I have come across a curious mistake. Under Useful Addresses
there are a number of Australian entries on whose accuracy I am not
qualified to comment, but one entry which purports to refer to New
Zealand I find extremely surprising, namely:-
Burrendong Arboretum near Wellington NZ (150 Hectares)
Firstly Burrendong is an Australian name and would certainly NOT be used
on this side of the Tasman and secondly I wonder where such a large
arboretum anywhere near Wellington could have been hiding from me all
these years!
We do have an extensive arboretum, Easwoodhill, in the eastern North
Island, but this is almost exclusively devoted to temperate ornamental
trees from the Northern hemisphere and represents the collecting
interests of a local landowner of means, who had stock sent out largely
from Britain in the mid-years of the century. It is certainly not a
Mediterranean collection.
In Wellington itself there is a handsome botanic garden, which features
a few Mediterranean species such as cork oaks and some pines, and
separately, but also under its juristiction, a very fine native plant
garden (Otari) exclusively used for growing the New Zealand flora, quite
a few members of which of which are suitable for Mediterranean climates.
I wonder if any Australian list member has ever heard of Burrendong and
can tell us where it can actually be found.
