Michael

I am absolutely staggered that 22-24C is " freezing cold" to you. Our
spring temperatures in Wainui are running between about 14 and 19
degrees and we reckon it is really warm and pleasant most days. In this
valley our highest summer temp would be around 27C and I find that
plenty hot. Although bred in Africa, hot weather is not at all to my
liking. It all goes to show how relative things like temperature are !!!

During childhood I lived on a coffee farm. The coffee grown in Kenya
was the upland arabica species. This does not need or like very high
temperatures and is happy in temperatures between about 15 and 38 C.
It _will_ survive temps right down to freezing, but too much cool
weather will interfere with flowering and fruiting.

The world's superior coffees, Kenya, Blue Mountain, New Guinea are all
arabica.

As I understand it, much or all of the coffee grown in Brazil is the
lowland species robusta.

In another posting you were asking about roses and perennials which will
take some shade. Among the roses hybrid musks are pretty tolerent. I
have a lovely bush of Cornelia, which gets only limited filtered
sunlight and flowers right through summer.

As shade-loving perennials Hostas would be hard to beat. They come in
all sorts of sizes and not a few colour forms. Another suggestion is the
NZ rock lily Arthropodium cirratum. Also Aquilegias, primroses and
polyanthus, Corydalis spp, Dicentra spp, Monardas, Thalictrums and
Lamium spp. I have even have some Anygozanthus which seem to like a bit
of shade.
