I agree. I bought some Rhmnus californicus 1-year old plants late last winter,
they've both survived a summer of my sporadic care but haven't grown at all and
aren't really anything to look at, having perhaps 4 leaves each. Do they have
some specific or unusual soil requirements?
That they taste like coffee isn't odd, I think Rhamnus and Caffea are both in
the Madder family.

I love the Native Rhamnus (californicus?) or Coffee berry, however it
seems to be a very slow growing bush. I have a seedling from last
summer, and it still has just 5 leaves! Anyways, the berries are the
kicker.....if you slightly chew them it the aftertaste you get is just
like coffee! Kind of a slimy texture though. The seeds look like coffee
beans do.
