Nancy -
Eschscholzia california has a coastal form, E. c. maritima, which grows
from Monterey southward and fits the description you give. It is a very
handsome plant, good for rock gardens or containers. I have seen some
similar types growing along the coast north of here as well, so there
may be a tendancy for these type of characteristics to be expressed in
coastal areas. There is a fair bit of variation in the California Poppy,
as might be suggested by the range of selected 'hybrids' available in
seed catalogs, etc. I grew the coastal form for years but it tended to
die out in the interior garden in which I had it planted at that time.
