To add to what Tim has written, think foothills of the Himalayas (for
Hedychiums) and slightly acidic, moist, leafy soils. They can take
the heat, but need loads of water to compensate and in blistering
sunlight, are probably better afforded very light shade for at least
part of the day. They are not too happy on alkaline soil either and
although many will grow, few attain thier full potential. I'm pleased
to say that with very few exceptions, Hedychiums seem to thrive in the
south part of the UK. Most members of the ginger family require
similar conditions, although some require higher minimum temperatures
than others.
