By far the quickest and easiest way to stop a stump from resprouting
is to treat the freshly cut stump with a liberal covering of neat
glyphosate.
Not the 10% active stuff comonly sold as "Zero" but the more
concentrated.
For more resistant plants you may need to resort to more a potent
herbicide
but I prefer glyphosate as it has no residue problems in the soil.
I've even managed to get rid of a monstorous Opuntia cactus planted
right along side
the drive way with just glyphosate painted into the freshly bared
stump
after removing the 3-4 cubic meters of top growth (what a nightmare
that was)
I seem to remember it took about four or five applications but as I
knew it
would take a while I left about 10 inches of stump so I could keep
rebaring
the interior of the stump to get the herbicide into the system.
In the trade this is commonly called the "cut stump method"
there is also the "frill method", "stem injection" and "basal bark
method" for
riding oneself of unwanted resiliant trees. Most however require a
fair
knowledge of application rates and some special techniques
but the good old "cut stump" is best, no unsightly dead tree to
remove later.
