I depends on your tastebuds. Richard starts eating our winter oranges in
November, me - I don't start until Xmas. the longer they hang on the tree
the sweeter they are. There are lots of different kinds also. Winter navels
are good eaters through from late autumn to late spring. then the Valencia
types take over, but they do not have the same flavour or texture and are
used here purely for juicing. Also locally grown here is an early ripener
called Newhall, which fetches a good price at market, but I would not bother
putting into my mouth. It has already been remarked that oranges do not
ripen all at once on the tree. This is great for personal use, but means
that an orchard cannot be cleared in one go, but has to be passed again and
again.
It would be interesting to know if similar varieties are grown in other
countries, or whether we all pretty much grow the same.
