fremontodendron germination
I'm a little late in responding to the discussion on
Fremontodendron, but thought this info from Marjorie Schmidt's
book "Growing California Native Plants" might be useful. She says
that the seedlings are subject to damping off and that some forms
don't transplant easily. She also says that they are very long
lived. (There are some obviously very old specimens around
California.) They need good drainage and the roots are very
susceptible to fungal infection if given summer water. So it's
probably the summer water that makes them short lived in landscapes,
and not their genetics.
