olives
I have recently spent a holiday in Provence,
and took some cuttings from the shoots at the base of an old olive tree.
I've dipped them in rooting hormone and planted them in John Innes 2, and
wonder if anyone can offer further advice, tips, hope, success stories? I've
also planted some olive stones, about 8 weeks ago - nothing so far! J.
Spring
Jill. I have used olive pomace as a
mulch and lots of olive seedlings appear in spring only.
They seem to need a long time to germinate,
about 4 months since the olive pressing season here is december and the
seedlings first appeared in march.
where I live there is a frost only every few
years and then it is only a night time -2º affair.
they will not be true to tipe.
In my area olive trees are propagated from
old wood cuttings with a small green branchlet left. some people use rooting
hormones but not everybody.
cuttings are taken in the late autumn and they are
expected to start growing in february march.
if you protect them too much from drying they may
rot.
