I think you're wrong about the Kikuyu runners, Moira - I've known it to
go under a house and come out the other side and I think the roots go
deep - but the covering method will get rid of even couch (and kikuyu)
if you keep a watch for green shoots poking through or around, and cover
them up. I got rid of couch that way.
Old carpet (not artificial fibre of course) is good too.
