Queries: are any of these genera grown elsewhere (apart from S.A.
itself, that is)? None, apart from that single sp, Agathosma ovata,
seems to be commercially available in the UK - and that single species
from a single nursery, that of the splendid Derry Watkins, who has a
particular interest in S. African plants. Does anyone on this list
grow or know any of them? If so, any comments, on their desirability,
cultivation, possible hardiness, would be much appreciated."
Of that list the only one I have grown is Coleonema. C. pulchellum
(syn. C. pulchrum) was fairly common as a landscape shrub in the Bay Area in my
youth. The white form was then called C. pulchrum 'Alba' but is now called C.
album, common name White-Breath-of-Heaven. The pink one was called
C. pulchrum, Pink-Breath-of-Heaven. My mother called them False Heather and they
do resemble Heathers in leaf texture and flower size though the flowers are of
course very different in form. Both were easily grown but tended to get
chlorotic and needed occasional drenches of chelated iron. I think they are
gently beautiful, restful plants,of fairly easy culture if given decent
drainage, and occasional supplamental water in summer (this being a dry summer
area)when young, but drought tolerant later. They are used less than they once
were here which is a shame.
There is a fairly recent cultivar of C. pulchellum
called 'Sunset Gold' which I am experimenting with as ground cover. So far it's
looking good. It resembles a "gold" (really yellow) colored
Erica, but is much easier here in our pH 6.5-7.0 soils.
