Re: Strawberries
Strawberries are anothing thing that I have given up growing at home (other
than the weedy one I mentioned earlier). So many strawberry patches are
popping up around here (mostly by southeast Asian entrepreneurs) that they
are incredibly abundant and cheap, when in season, and I don't know what
varieties they are planting, but they are amazingly sweet and flavorful, not
at all like the ones you find in the supermarket. With all of the
competition, a flat of berries (equivalent to around 5 pint-size baskets)
usually runs around $5. I passed one of these local patches last winter that
had a simple, hand-lettered sign which read, "STRAWRRIES," and underneath was
another, which simply read, "WE CLOSE."
